Mary-Ann Wright highlights a Common Pension Valuation Pitfall on Divorce in The i Paper

Manders Law Managing Partner Mary-Ann Wright shared her expertise this week on one of the most important and often overlooked, aspects of divorce: pension valuations.

In the article, “When I divorced, I lost my pension – here’s what you need to know before marriage,” Mary-Ann highlights the risks of relying solely on a pension’s Cash Equivalent Transfer Value (CETV) during financial negotiations.

“Where Direct Benefit pensions form a significant part of the marital assets, specialist family law solicitors like us frequently recommend obtaining a report from a pensions expert who can assess whether the CETV is a fair indicator of value and recommend an appropriate pension sharing percentage” she said.

This is particularly valuable where there are:

  • multiple pensions;
  • public sector pensions;
  • large DB benefits;
  • offsetting proposals.

“These reports are not cheap but can save the client from a very expensive mistake ! There are no shortcuts I am afraid.”
