Manders Law Managing Partner Mary-Ann Wright shared her expertise this week on one of the most important and often overlooked, aspects of divorce: pension valuations.
In the article, “When I divorced, I lost my pension – here’s what you need to know before marriage,” Mary-Ann highlights the risks of relying solely on a pension’s Cash Equivalent Transfer Value (CETV) during financial negotiations.
“Where Direct Benefit pensions form a significant part of the marital assets, specialist family law solicitors like us frequently recommend obtaining a report from a pensions expert who can assess whether the CETV is a fair indicator of value and recommend an appropriate pension sharing percentage” she said.
This is particularly valuable where there are:
- multiple pensions;
- public sector pensions;
- large DB benefits;
- offsetting proposals.
“These reports are not cheap but can save the client from a very expensive mistake ! There are no shortcuts I am afraid.”
